Prenuptial agreements: Negotiating women's roles and changing how people think love, commitment, and relationships
Abstract
The issue of Contractual Marriage, or Marriage with Agreements, in Television Series (TV Series) has emerged as a phenomenon reflecting a shift in the cultural meaning of marriage within popular culture. This study aims to analyze the concept of marriage agreements as a trend in popular culture and a form of female role negotiation in media, specifically through two Indonesian TV Series: Marriage with Benefit and Wedding Agreement. Employing a qualitative approach and utilizing Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis, this research examines how subject-object positions and viewer positioning contribute to the construction of gender representation within the narrative of contractual marriage. The findings reveal that women are frequently positioned as objects subjected to subordination, however, there are also acts of resistance and negotiation that illustrate the dynamic power relations of gender. Moreover, television series function as agents of popular cultural trends, playing a central role in shaping modes of thinking, behavior, dress, and communication. Analyzed through Jean Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra, the depiction of contractual marriage in both series is revealed as a simulation of reality, presenting love and commitment in a hyperreal format, distanced from their original meanings. Within the context of popular culture, TV Series act as cultural agents that shape public perceptions of female identity and the institution of marriage in a digital and consumerist society. The results of this study may further be extended to the concept of participatory culture as theorized by Henry Jenkins, which emphasizes the active role of audiences in creating and sharing media content, not merely as passive consumers, but as co-creators in the media landscape.
