Analysis of Contents of Mandarin Language Teaching Materials: Hanyu Textbook Levels 1-2

Abstract


 

Textbooks are indispensable auxiliary tools in teaching. In Indonesia, with the increasing number of Chinese language learners, many local Indonesian textbooks have emerged, but their quality varies. This study focuses on analyzing two volumes of local Chinese language textbooks titled "汉语 Bahasa Mandarin", examining their texts, vocabulary, grammar, Chinese characters, exercises, and errors. The research finds that the first volume contains more reading-oriented texts compared to the second volume, in contrast to conversational texts. However, in terms of word and sentence count, the second volume is significantly longer. The vocabulary, grammar, and characters introduced in the first and second volumes adhere to established curriculum levels. Consequently, the first volume contains more first-level vocabulary, grammar, and characters, while the second volume increases in difficulty, introducing more second and third-level items. In terms of exercise types, the second volume has more exercises compared to the first volume. Additionally, the second volume includes exercises of higher difficulty such as selecting words to fill in blanks, completing sentences, true/false statements, and conducting interviews. Errors in both volumes can be categorized into four types: pinyin errors, Chinese character writing errors, misclassification of vocabulary and grammar, and unclear categorization of vocabulary.
