Abstract

For the last decades, there are a lot of scholars that in agreement with the fact that Admiral Chengho had a close relationship with Islamic missionary activities in Indonesia. There are even several scientists who consider that Admiral Chengho was the first Islamic missionary in Indonesia. However, this paper does not agree on that point because it was known that prior to Admiral Chengho arrival in Indonesia for the first time, Indonesian had already known Islam through Arabs, Indian Gujarat and Persian. In addition, due to insignificant development in its early stages, Islam had a very weak influence in the society. Admiral Chengho was not the first Islamic missionary in Indonesia, but he was the head figure in the spread and development of Islam in Indonesia. The reason, that Admiral Chengho capable of significantly develop Islam in Indonesia, was adequate capability and support from China at that time in setting up missionary activities to other countries. During his time in Indonesia, Admiral Chengho set up several missionary activities in Palembang and Java, however the support and effect in Java was found to be more significant in comparison to Palembang. He commonly utilize Islamic-Tionghoa ethnic to spread Islam to indigenous people and local Islamic-Tionghoa ethnic.
