The Negotiation of authenticity in Rafflesia Arnoldii ecotourism: Postmodern tension on local community empowerment in Bengkulu
Abstract
The growth of ecotourism plays a significant role in both economic development and environmental conservation. This study explores the role of interpersonal communication in promoting Rafflesia Arnoldii ecotourism in Bengkulu Province, focusing on the communication practices of local communities, tour guides, and tourism managers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, focus group discussions (FGD), and documentary studies. The study found that interpersonal communication plays a vital role in conveying accurate information about the uniqueness and biological characteristics of Rafflesia Arnoldii, creating emotional connections between tourists and local culture, and enhancing the tourism experience. The local community utilizes several effective communication strategies, including the use of local language, cultural narratives, and non-verbal expressions. However, barriers such as limited knowledge of modern communication methods and geographical challenges hinder the broader promotion of ecotourism. The research also highlights the need for strengthening the communication capacity of local communities and tour guides to improve the effectiveness of communication and the overall tourism experience. The findings suggest that integrating interpersonal communication with digital media strategies can enhance the promotion of ecotourism and empower local communities in conservation efforts. This study contributes original insights into the field of communication and tourism, focusing on the promotion of ecotourism through direct interpersonal communication.
