Abstract


Reading is an activity that seems easy but actually is not. Different way of reading with the native language is what makes it difficult. Reading anything written in native language is at low level of difficulty, while reading a foreign language text is higher in the level of difficulty. Freshmen of Chinese Literature Studies Program also experience it. Therefore, the writer would like to get information on reading interest among freshmen of Chinese Literature Studies Program in Bunda Mulia University through questionnaires and data collection. The writer expect to study the ability and difficulties of the students in comprehensing a passage. It is founded that more students who like to read than those who don’t, and their ability to comprehend is also good. They found difficulties when they have to read Chinese character, which is unfamiliar for them. Sometimes students even forget how to read the Chinese character. Another boundaries are the lack of knowledge on the situation in China. Therefore, either techniques or materials to deliver to students should be adjusted to the situation and needs of students.
