COMPARISON OF CHINESE TEXTBOOK “BASIC CHINESE VOLUME 1” AND “MEIHUA VOLUME 1”

Abstract


The growth of the Chinese economy and society continues to make Chinese language become a very important language in the world. In Indonesia, more school, cram schools and universities offer Mandarin language course, and more Indonesian students are learning Mandarin. Teaching materials and the quality of teaching materials are an important part of teaching Mandarin as a second language. The quality of teaching materials influences the success or failure rate of second language teaching. The object of this research is the Chinese textbook "Basic Chinese" volume 1 and "Meihua" volume 1 which are widely used at the elementary school level in Indonesia. The research focuses on the weak and strength points of these two Chinese textbooks, from writing, structure, vocabulary, grammar, and practice aspect, and also provide some suggestion for improving Chinese textbook in Indonesian elementary schools. The results show volume 1 of "Meihua" is better in terms of vocabulary, while volume 1 of "Basic Mandarin" is better in terms of grammatical explanations. "Basic Chinese" volume 1 has more words outside the context of the elementary school level, "Meihua" volume 1 has more of Chinese characters writing and repetitions.
